UPI QR code meaning
A UPI QR code lets a payer scan a code and open a payment request in a compatible UPI app. The QR itself does not move money. It only helps the payer's app read payment details such as the payee UPI ID, payee name, amount, and note.
After scanning, the payer checks the details inside their own UPI app and approves the transaction using their UPI PIN. The UPI PIN is never stored in the QR code.
Payee address
The UPI ID or VPA, often encoded as the pa field in a UPI payment link.
Payee name
The merchant, shop, business, or account holder name shown for review.
Amount and note
The amount and note can be included, or amount can be left blank for payer entry.
What is inside a UPI QR?
Many UPI QR codes encode a link that starts with upi://pay. Common parameters include pa for payee address, pn for payee name, am for amount, tn for transaction note, and cu=INR for currency.
For example, a simple UPI payment link can contain a payee UPI ID and payee name. A fixed amount QR can also include an amount. A static QR for shop counters usually leaves the amount blank.
Static, fixed amount, and dynamic UPI QR
Static UPI QR
Reusable QR without a fixed amount. The payer enters the amount after scanning.
Fixed amount UPI QR
QR with a known amount, useful for invoices, order totals, fees, and one-time requests.
Dynamic UPI QR
Usually generated by a payment system for a specific transaction and often tied to reconciliation or status tracking.

UPI QR Code FAQ
Does a UPI QR code contain my UPI PIN?
No. The UPI PIN is entered only inside the payer's UPI app while approving the payment.
Can a UPI QR code work without an amount?
Yes. A static QR can omit the amount so the payer enters it after scanning.
Is every UPI QR a payment gateway QR?
No. Some QR codes are simple static payment requests. Gateway-generated QR codes may include additional merchant and transaction handling.
